FAQs
What is Counseling?
Counseling, or counseling, is a safe place for people to express their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or repercussions. Counseling is also where people can actually identify their problems, find out how to overcome those problems, and make their lives the best it can be. Our trained and licensed counselors at Life & Work Soulutions generally employ a type of Counseling called Cognitive-behavioral Counseling. The term “cognitive” applies to the way we “think” and the term “behavioral” applies to the way we “act.” Cognitive-behavioral Counseling identifies and changes self-defeating thoughts and behaviors. We also regard each client as an individual to be cared for and encouraged during their healing journey. We offer unconditional positive acceptance for everyone regardless of their condition.
What training does a Counselor have?
A Counselor is a person who has completed rigorous academic studies and real life training. Each of our Counselors has at least a Master’s degree or a PhD in Counseling or Psychology. Generally, it takes 2 to 3 years of study to obtain a Master’s degree and an additional 3 to 4 years to obtain a Doctoral degree. After a Counselor graduates with his or her master’s degree, the state of Florida mandates that an additional 2 to 3 years of supervised internship be completed before taking a national licensing exam. Each counselor is also required to complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years.
What do all of the letters mean after the Counselor’s name?
The letters after a Counselor’s name indicate the level of education and licensure each person has obtained.
- PhD: Doctor of Philosophy
- PsyD: Doctor of Psychology
- MA: Master of Arts
- MS: Master of Science
- MSW: Master of Social Work
- LMHC: Licensed Mental Health Counselo
r
- LMFT: Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
- LCSW: Licensed Clinical Social Worker
How do I select a Counselor who is right for me?
Selecting the right Counselor is crucial for healing. Research has shown that the best predictor of treatment success is the relationship between the Counselor and the client. It is important for the client to find a Counselor he or she can trust and that he or she thinks is a good match for his or her personality style. A Counselor should not just tell the client what he or she wants to hear, but should be honest and direct and tell the client what he or she needs to hear to in the healing journey.
If I go to Counseling does that mean I'm crazy?
No, the vast majority of people are not “crazy.” Crazy is generally not a term used in Counseling. Some people have had a break in their perception of reality and see or hear things that are not real. Those incidents are termed “psychotic” and not “crazy.” Counseling is a very accepted way for people to heal from mental health and substance use disorders.
What am I supposed to do in Counseling?
Counseling at Life & Work Soulutions called “talk therapy” or “insight therapy.” Generally, the Counselor and client(s) meet in a private soundproof office and talk about the problems and issues and work together to explore and implement solutions.
What can I expect from going to Counseling?
While there is no guarantee that everyone is healed completely through Counseling, but there is much success in the therapeutic process. Counseling provides hope for demoralized people, a new perspective on the client’s life, and an empathic, trusting and caring relationship.
Can I bring my kids along to my Counseling session?
Usually, children should not come along with parents to Counseling unless the Counseling is specifically for the child. Children of all age are very sensitive to their parents’ moods, tone of voice, actions, and reactions and much of what is talked about is most likely inappropriate for children to hear. Children can also be a distraction that will detract from the session.
What are family and couples counseling?
Family and couples Counseling is grounded in the same principles as individual Counseling except that family members or couples attend the sessions together and work in tandem with the Counselor addressing conflict within the family or between the couple.
What is group counseling?
Group Counseling is grounded in the same principles as individual Counseling except that unrelated people with the same issue, such as depression or substance abuse, attend the sessions together. Each group member has the option to share about his or her issues and offer constructive feedback and support under the guidance of the Counselor.
